Leading in humanitarian crisis is an inevitable and important responsibility for all leaders in today’s world. Whether they are in government, business, civil society or international organizations, today’s leaders have a duty to develop policies and institutions which can limit the worst effects of violence, climate change and disease on human society. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to be “ethically-ready” and “policy-ready” to take on a humanitarian leadership role whenever crisis strikes their organizations and the people around it. The course gives students important overview knowledge of the scale and character of war, disasters and disease in the world today. It then introduces them to the legal, policy and operational frameworks of global governance which attempt to regulate and manage the global challenges of human violence, climate hazards and disease. The course concentrates on the predominantly Western field of humanitarian action and diplomacy that operates at the frontlines of war and disaster today but asks students to challenge this prevailing western orthodoxy with next generation thinking from Asia and around the world. At all times, the course asks students to reflect on their own crisis values and to develop their personal humanitarian ethics as leaders.
