Schwarzman Scholars Announces Class of 2023-2024, Incoming Scholars from 36 Countries to Join Growing Network of 1,000+ Young Global Leaders

NEW YORK, NY, USA and BEIJING, CHINA Dec. 7, 2022 — Schwarzman Scholars, one of the world’s most prestigious graduate fellowships, today announced its eighth cohort of admitted students. The 151 candidates, selected from 36 countries and 121 universities around the world, will receive the opportunity to study in a one-year, fully-funded Master’s degree program in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College on the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. The high caliber of this year’s admitted students demonstrates that young leaders continue to be invested in understanding and fostering cross-cultural ties with China.

The Admissions team selected this year’s incoming students from an initial pool of nearly 3,000 applicants. With the incoming cohort, the Schwarzman Scholars network expands to more than 1,000 members, with Scholars from a total of 88 countries and 390 institutions worldwide.

The Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2024, which will enroll in August 2023, is comprised of exceptional young leaders, including:

  • A published author on outer space law
  • A ballerina trained at the Bolshoi Ballet
  • A co-author of the COP26 Youth Climate Manifesto
  • Founders of companies which have brought affordable energy to thousands in Cameroon and Benin
  • An award-winning immune system researcher
  • A Secretary of the Cross Party Group on China for the Scottish Parliament
  • Members of the Forbes 30 under 30
  • Published authors, poets, and successful musicians
  • Program leaders at the United Nations
  • Founders of start-ups in fields such as education, cosmetics, health technology, transportation, block-chain technology, and manufacturing
  • Advisors and managing directors for venture capital and hedge funds

Schwarzman, Founding Trustee of Schwarzman Scholars. “As the geopolitical landscape grows more complex each day, I am inspired by this year’s selected Scholars and their readiness to engage thoughtfully with global issues and drive change. Scholars were selected through a rigorous application process designed to identify leadership potential, intellect, and strength of character. Over 400 candidates from 60 countries were invited to interview with panels of CEOs, government officials, university presidents, journalists, and non-profit executives, among others.

Once admitted, the Scholars will pursue a one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs with a core curriculum focused on three pillars: Leadership, Global Affairs, and China. The students are taught by leading faculty from Tsinghua and a number of other internationally recognized universities, and will have the opportunity to attend guest lectures by prominent global thought leaders. Beyond the classroom, Scholars will gain exceptional exposure to China through internships, mentors, and high-profile speakers. Additionally, career development resources are provided to help Scholars lead in various fields upon graduation.

The program’s unique combination of coursework, cultural immersion, and personal and professional development opportunities equips students with a well-rounded understanding of China’s changing role in the world, critically important to leadership in any field in the 21st century.

Schwarzman Scholars is a one year fully-funded Master’s program in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. As the first scholarship of its kind created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century, Schwarzman Scholars aspires to build a global network of young leaders that are prepared to confront the pressing challenges facing the world.

Each year, up to 200 candidates are chosen for this highly selective program. Scholars are selected based on their leadership qualities and the potential to understand and bridge cultural and political differences. They live in Beijing for a year of intensive study, honing leadership skills through a curriculum designed and taught by leading academics from internationally ranked institutions.

12月7日,清华大学苏世民书院2023级学者名单正式公布。新一届的151名苏世民学者来自全球36个国家和地区的121所大学。随着新学者的加入,苏世民学者全球网络将超过1000名成员。

2023级(第八届)苏世民学者将于2023年8月正式入学。他们都展现出希望致力于深入了解中国,促进跨文化交流的愿望与决心。在这群优秀的青年中,有在外太空法律方面发表过文章的学者,莫斯科大剧院芭蕾舞团的芭蕾舞演员,第26届联合国气候变化大会(COP26)青年气候宣言的合著者,为喀麦隆和贝宁数千用户提供经济能源的公司创始人,屡获殊荣的免疫系统研究员,苏格兰议会中国问题跨党小组秘书,“福布斯30位30岁以下精英榜”上榜者,多次发表优秀作品的作家、诗人和音乐家,联合国项目的负责人,教育、健康科技、交通、区块链技术和制造等领域的初创企业创始人以及风险投资和对冲基金的顾问和总经理等。

来自60个国家或地区的400多位候选人受邀进行了线上面试,分别从领导潜质、学术能力以及品格等方面接受考察。面试官由卓有成就的各领域领导者组成,其中包括企业高管、政府官员、大学校长与知名教授等。

入学后,学生们将完成包括领导力、中国发展以及全球事务为核心的课程。书院有强大的由具备国际影响力和业界同行公认的知名教授组成的教学团队,为学生提供高端讲座与对话。课堂教学以外,学者们还可以通过实习机会、业界指导和高端讲座等途径深入了解中国。此外,书院还为学生提供各种职业发展资源,帮助学者毕业后更好地在各个领域施展才能。
